caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare

Channeling my inner Alexander Wang by dressing up sweatpants! Score for A.Wang

Countdown: One and .5 more days left of 2010. I'm still in search of a dress. In the meantime, I'm looking forward to a great 2011. Said in the beginning of 2010, it brought me a year full of ups and downs and loopy rollercoaster rides. I had my share of cries and laughs and definitely a wonderful experience with this blog. So Merci readers!

My new year's resolutions:
1. Don't hesitate to take new chances.
2. Work hard and smart, but keeping in mind that I'm still young and will make mistakes.
3. Laugh a lot more.
4. Love myself more.

as of late...

With less than five days until New Year's and less than two weeks until my school's Winter Formal, I'm in dire need of a dress. My ideal dress for this year would be an accumulation of any of the dresses above. White/cream, lacy sheer goodness, flowy layers, and ruffles are what I have in mind.

the aftermath

Of all the days for it to shower unconditionally this break, it had to be on Christmas day. And of course the sun decides to poke its rays the next day. Either way, I'm glad the skies were clear today. Though this outfit here doesn't really scream holiday season, nevertheless, I hope you all had a great Christmas filled with food comas, laughter and round trips to family abodes - I know I did. Now, I'm off to foray the bags of goodies my mother brought home from post-Christmas sales!

white beauty

Magdalena Frackowiak for Muse Winter 2010
What's with beautiful European girls and super-hard-to-pronounce last names? Magdalena is such a girl crush. And this editorial conveys it well. I love the grainy texuture film-ized vibe these photos have. As with the dress in the first photo, it's a dream. Absolutely j'adore the simplicity and the scallopped hems in each layer.

a little peep into Peeps: Amelia Lindquist

Some time ago, I was fortunate enough to get a little up and personal with Amelia Lindquist, creator and the amazing designer of the label, Peeps. Upon stumbling across her label, I immediately fell in love with her use of knits, neutral palettes, strategic cuts and simplicity vibe. Even as a young girl, Amelia was designing and selling her creations. Now as she juggles studies at Parsons and her busy schedule, she still managed to present us an exquisite fall/winter 2010 collection. Presenting Amelia Lindquist and her label Peeps:
1. Firstly, tell us a bit about yourself.

I was born and raised in Southern California and I am in my final year at Parsons in NY.

2. How did you start out as a designer?

I got really interested in fashion when I started to sew at age 10. It was something that was so new to me at the time and I loved the idea of creation.
3. Can you give us an inside scoop of your label, Peeps?

I started Peeps in high school. The name actually was a nickname of mine growing up and got the URL when i was 8. I learned web design so I could update the site with the designs I had made because people at my school would always ask me to make them things. From there it caught on and now I make seasonal collections rather than random garments that get manufactured. It is also now sold in stores such as Pixie Market and Spanish Moss.
4. I see you started your very first collection back in 2009 (Fall09) with a very neutral palette consisting of blacks, grays and creams. Within a year, you managed to incorporate richer colors such as deep violet and deep burnt orange into your latest collection (F/W10). What inspired you for these color changes?

I studied in Paris a year ago and was really into those neutral colors, I made the collection right before I left. While I was there I produced a bunch of projects and then noticed that they all had that similar color palette so when I was thinking about my F/W10 I decided I should change it up a bit.

5. Describe a typical day in the Peeps studio.

A typical day would be a very busy one. Since I am juggling these collections with school, time has to be managed appropriately. I have a couple interns who are there once in a while but mostly I'm alone having intense designing and sewing days.
6. What would you say is the Peeps vibe?

Something that references the past but keeps it modern.

7. Who are the people you look up to the most?

I look up to my friends and designers I have worked for. It's inspiring to surround yourself with inspiring people.

8. Where do you hope to see yourself and Peeps in five years?

In five years I hope to have conquered a master’s program. Peeps hopefully will still be around but I also hope to have a more conceptually involved designer collection going as well.
9. What is your favorite piece that you have designed so far and why?

I made this wool mohair herringbone coat when I was studying in Paris. It has a big collar that you can unbutton then button higher around your neck, its layered and has leather patches on the front like men's protective hunting gear. It's my favorite coat and my favorite thing I've made. It's also the warmest coat I have.
10. Fashion bloggers are continuously taking the fashion scene by storm, what is your take on fashion bloggers?

I think it's a great way to share information and collect inspiration.

11. Our last designer interviewee wants to know, what is your favorite kind of bikini?

I love the monokini.

12. And finally, what is one random question you would like to ask our next interviewee?

What is your favorite month of the year?

For more peeps into Peeps.

I cried on your mothers shoulder like a broken hearted soldier

Mother's Knit Shawl | Polka-dotted Sheer Babydoll | Vintage Leather Belt | Leather Pants | Vintage Kitten Heels

I dug up this exquisite sheer purple polka-dotted babydoll when I was cleaning out a portion of my closet last week. I have no recollection as to where I had gotten this, since this must be a few years old. All the same, I adore it. On a side note, I can't wait to get the next four days over with. Then it's good-bye school, and hello lounging around in the morning and drinking green tea in the afternoon.

Kim from Kymare

I was recently introduced to Kymare, a swimwear label based in the Netherlands whose designs had me head over heels at first sight. Kymare's unique approach in the cuts and details of the swimsuits really appealed to me, so of course I had to know what went down with Kymare. Luckily, the beautiful designer behind Kymare, Kim Wormgoor gave me a chance to catch up with her up and personal story!

1. Introduce yourself.

I am Kim, living in Arnhem the Netherlands, which is NOT a city in Denmark, and often called Holland which is incorrect. I Studied Fashion at ARTEZ, graduated in 2002, started Kymare in 2005 and have a passion for water, Australia and my two brothers called Rob & Niek.

2. What made you decide to become a designer?

I like to create and develop, it's something that comes natural to me and I can do this best as a designer.

3. What’s the story behind your label, Kymare?

The name of the label is a combination of my name Kim and the Italian translation for sea: mare. My passion for water and windsurfing always takes an important place in the collection. For me designing is using my intuition and do what I love so the designs need to speak for themselves without interesting concepts or whatsoever.

4. Describe a typical day in the Kymare studio.

First I put the heat on! On the moment it's freezing here, -6 C during the day and the studio is located in an old house from somewhere in the 16th century. I check my emails and start this week with my first sketches and mood board for SS12. In winter time I always design the next collection since we only have one collection a year.

5. Your career kicked off with your very first swimwear collection at the Mittelmoda Fashion Awards in Grado, Italy back in 2003. Why swimwear?

I graduated and preferred a design job in the surf and swim industry because I love the laid back live style of surfers with water, sun and travels. So working as a designer means also a lot of inspiration trips to hot spots like California! And sport events, but my swimwear collection for the MFA was a bit more avant-garde and chic.

6. What would you say is the Kymare vibe?

A mix of effortless, chic, fun & hedonism, refined, graphic, little bit surf and I adore the 70ies swim style.

7. I see that you have taken Kymare even further by designing your first Kymare clothing line for the 2011 summer season (I absolutely adore it). Can you give us a little background on how this process was similar or different from designing swimwear? And how did you transfer the Kymare vibe from swimwear to clothing?

What I mentioned above needs to be in a bikini as well as in a jumpsuit or blazer. Always comfortable versus chic, every piece needs to be a personal must have.

8. Where do you see yourself and Kymare heading for the future?

I don't look to far ahead but I want to refine the Kymare signature in the next SS12 collection, enjoy my work, travel and of course do good business.

9. Who are your muses?

Free minded women in a refined, edgy, elegant style. I like the style of Dree Hemingway.

10. With fashion bloggers on the rise, what is your take on bloggers?

I almost never buy fashion magazines anymore, I only visit blogs and buy the nice issues of ID or Rush mag. Bloggers are more inspiring and real to me then the standard fashion magazines. It's an honor if bloggers post about Kymare!

11. Any words of advice for aspiring designers?

Follow your intuition and don't think too much in the future, this only makes you worry.

12. And lastly, what is one question you would like to ask our next interviewee?

What's your favorite kind of bikini?
Who agrees that we all love free minded women with a refined, edgy, elegant style? I definitely do. And I cannot emphasize how pleased I am at the fact that Kymare has expanded into clothing, because each piece just gets better and better! What do you folks think?
